DIY Advent Calendar with my Explore

make it mondayWelcome to another Make it Monday blog circle, can you believe December is here and it is my favorite time of the year. If you came here from Jen Wright Designs where Jen shared a free scrapbook template and freebie this week then thanks for stopping by.

Last year I worked very hard on an Advent Calendar (you can see the one from last year HERE) and while I like it I decided that I really liked this Advent Calendar from SVGcuts and now that I have the Explore and can use SVG files I decided that I just had to make this Advent Calendar with the Yuletide Paper from Close To My Heart. I was actually quite excited to be able to use products from SVGcuts as I couldn’t use SVG files with my Cricut Expression 2. I can not talk about the Cricut Explore enough as this is truly the best machine I have ever had. All I want to do is sit and make stuff with it. Enough about my awesome machine though, its time to talk about my new Advent Calendar.

Not to toot my own horn or anything but anybody that comes into the house and sees it absolutely loves it. I am in love with it as well but their are some things that I have learned as I was making this Advent Calendar and I will share them with you. I was out of my absolute favorite wet glue when I started this project which is Close To My Hearts bonding memories glue so I decided to use the glue that SVGcuts was showing in the video. I like this glue but you have to be careful not to use to much of it or it will warp your paper a bit. The Scotch Adhesive glue is a nice enough glue though and it comes off my fingers easily. I don’t know about you but when I am gluing tons of things together I tend to get glue all over my hands.

The next thing I want to mention is that SVGcuts is awesome in the fact that they have a tutorial video on how to put whatever you have purchased from them together. I highly recommend watching a tutorial for whatever prodcut you have purchased from them. The next thing I am going to suggest is reading and maybe even printing the PDF document that they give you with your cut file as well. If I had paid attention to the PDF file more my Advent Calendar would not have taken me such a long time to put it together. SVGcuts really does everything in their power to make putting their cut files together as easy as possible.

When I purchased my Advent Calendar file from them I received Mistletoe Manor for free and I can’t wait to try and make the lantern that comes with that cut file, I also purchased Santa’s Village and I plan on making some of the village if not the whole village before December is over. I think I am addicted to SVGcuts and my Cricut now, shhhhh don’t tell anyone.

Here is my Advent Calendar in all it’s glory. I used some Noel ribbon that I have had for years now and I could have used a tad bit longer piece of ribbon so that my bow would be pretty. I am probably the worst bow maker out there and I used scor-tape on the sides of my Advent Calendar to attach the ribbon as I wanted to make sure that my ribbon stayed on without any problems.

With all that being said my mini me is loving the Advent Calendar. Just like last year I make this about activities more then I make it about little presents. So far she has received a coupon everyday except for one day where she received a Shopkin (she loves things so I bought a pack of 5 and I will randomly give her one each week). An example of some of the coupons that she has received so far have been:

  • Special crafting time with mommy
  • Sleeping in mommy’s bed one night
  • Egg Nogg and cookies for afternoon snack
  • A trip to yogurt land
  • Stay up late and watch her favorite Holiday movie

I have been putting the coupons in daily because I know that she would go peeking and I want to keep her excited. What are your plans for this Christmas season? Do you use an Advent Calendar? Let us know in the comments.

Now it’s time to check our Kristie from Artful Adventures where she shows you how to make a festive holiday mini album using envelopes.

We don’t usually use an Advent calendar, but I love the idea of the little special treats you are putting inside. Great idea. And I LOVE that Christmas village you linked us to! It is ADORABLE!

Thanks Kristie, I can’t wait to make something from that Christmas village. I am hoping to get started on one of them this week.
