Gelatos and Scrapbooking

Some of you may know that my word for this year is CREATE and I have intentionally been working on bringing this word into my life. I started working as a teacher this year, my business is doing well and my mind and body are being taken care of. With that being said something that I have always wondered about but have always been afraid to go near is mixed media.

I purchased my first set of Gelatos last year but hardly used them and didn’t really try to learn to much about them. Then I bought another set of Gelatos this year but still didn’t really use them to much. And then something happened I got over my fear of mixed media and decided to go ahead and take the plunge and when I say take the plunge I really mean take the plunge.

I now have a Gelli printing plate, which is awesome by the way, I have some acrylic paint, I have letterpress supplies, I have molding paste (which is so cool) and I have more Gelatos. Before I knew it all I could think about was how to put all this stuff together. I even bought myself an art journal book just for playing and don’t let me forget the awesome screen printing stuff as well.

So now I find myself with all these awesome crafty things and I am wondering how does all this stuff work and low and behold Craftsy has a class for me and an amazing class by an amazing woman, Wilna Furstenberg. I have been following Wilna for a long time and I don’t know where I have been that I did not know about this course. This is one of those courses that I literally could not stop watching and somehow managed to finish it in a few days with my busy schedule.

Now that I have finished the course I have decided to recreate one of the layouts that Wilna made during the course. The main technique in this lesson was using Gelatos and molding paste. I have learned a ton by creating this layout. First things first, Gelatos are a ton of fun and I definitely want the big pack of Gelatos that you can purchase because I didn’t have enough colors to really get the look I wanted. I started with putting my Gelatos on to the paper.

The next step was to add some water to these colors, which of course scares the snot out of me but I went ahead and grabbed my paint brush and some water and low and behold I created a masterpiece or at least a masterpiece to me.

Next up was the stencil that Wilna provides with the course, that can be cut out with your Cameo or Cricut Explore. The stencil is great and I should have followed her exact instructions to create the stencil, instead I thought I was smart by cutting the stencil out with transparency and sticking it down onto my paper with washi tape. All I can say is don’t follow in my footsteps.

gelatos and molding paste

This idea wasn’t horrible but it definiely wasn’t great what happened was that my stencil was a little flimsy and it kept moving away from the paper so I din’t get a clear imprint with my molding paste but I continued on with the process because I started this layout, knowing that it was going to be a learning process for me as well as the layout is for me to document more about my word for the year.

IMG_0426.JPGI love this stencil and I love the molding paste and I love the gelatos, this is a technique that I want to try again and again and again, you get the point. Here are a few close up shots of the molding paste so that you can see what I mean about my stencil moving and my imprint not being as clean as I had hoped it would be.

Next up was a photo and some butterfiles and journaling of course. I literally just took the most recent selfie in my phone which is not the best selfie in the world and went with it. Then I cut out the butterflies that are also included with the course with some old paper that has been in my stash forever. I inked the patterned paper butterflies with some pink ink around the edges and then bussted out my scor-tape to get them all stuck down to my layout. I even brought out some old photo corners in case I decide to change my crappy selfie out at some point. A little journaling and I am calling this layout done and a new technique learned.

Here is the final product. I din’t manage to get all of the butterflies that I cut on it but I am happy with the final result. I am even more happy with the new techniques that I have learned with the molding paste and the Gelatos. I think this saying would be perfect for a layout for each of my children so that would just be more fun for me!

Beth, This is great! Will the stencil work with a Cricuit Mini? I think I’m getting a used one. And I’m yearning to play with Gelatos. I love what you did!

I don’t think it will work with a mini as you are only able to upload SVG files to design space 🙁 Gelatos are a ton of fun though!!!

  2. Amy Paegel

    I think it’s a beautiful layout!!

      Thank you so much Amy!

I can’t figure out how to get the 10 dollars off… I clicked on your link and it’s offered for 29.00 (Is it normally 39.00?) I’d love to take this class. I’d love to save 10 bucks too… help.

    Thanks,
    Tina

Hi Tina, I’m so sorry but the 10.00 off expired. The class is well worth the 39.00 as Wilna even gives you all the files to create the same layouts. The files are provided as printables or as cut files. I have to go update the post about the 10.00 off not being available any longer, please forgive me for that oversight.
